Do’s & Don’ts when looking for a job in Australia

DO’s

  • Regularly visit the various Australian job search websites BEFORE making the decision to emigrate to familiarise yourself with the job opportunities in your field of choice.
  • Primarily apply for permanent residence visas. A very important factor. Possible employers will enquire about your immigration status and having your residence visas (or at least being in the process of applying) will remove barriers and make you more “marketable” in the Australian employment marketplace.
  • It is advisable to start applying for advertised job opportunities from OVERSEAS, but only 1 to 12 weeks before a possible starting date.
  • Prepare your C.V. in the Australian style and prepare a short but clear cover letter that confirms that you have been granted permanent residence visas (or that you have been assessed as an eligible candidate and your visa application has been lodged).
  • Aspire to make a positive impression during the interview, be flexible and have copies of your residence visas and references available for employers to confirm.

DON’Ts

  • Expect everything to be as it were back in your home country. Be flexible and willing to adapt to the local ways of doing things.
  • Expect a job at the same level or higher than you had overseas. You may lack Australia local knowledge and may need to settle for a junior position in order to advance later. Wait one year.
  • Expect to receive a job offer immediately. On average, it can take native Australian 1 – 8 weeks to find a new job.
  • "Over negotiate" the contract with your first employer. Show flexibility and understand that employment law and contract terms may be different in Australia.
